Personal diary, account book, and farming journal (ca. 250 pp.) includes 7 pages re several Confederate soldiers serving in the Civil War (listing promotions, length of service, casualties, lists of killed and wounded). Accounts record purchases from a general store, and expenditures for labor, such as shearing sheep, or use of a horse and plow. Farm records include frequent weather observations, dates of plowing, harvest, frost, and other annual events in farm life, most recorded under the heading of "Change of Seasons." Portion relating to Civil War Full page on the military service of John Watts Becknell, a private in the 1st Palmetto South Carolina Sharp Shooters, 6th S.C. Regiment; Becknell's tour in Virginia included battles at Dranesville, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Centerville, and elsewhere. Becknell was wounded at Fredericksburg and died at Emory and Henry College Hospital in Washington County, Va.

Becknell was a resident of Pickens District, S.C.; husband of Sarah Ann Defreese (1814-1882), and father of John Watts Becknell (1840-1864) and eight other children, one of whom, "William" is described as "idiotic" in the U.S. Census of 1860.
